Here we will set up a word template for your thesis or dissertation:

You will set the following in the template:

    Margins
    Page Numbering
    Line Spacing
    Fonts

    Margins

Make sure your margins are set correctly before typing anything.

The easiest time to set the margins on your thesis is before you get started writing. The requirements for the margins on your electronic thesis follow the restrictions for a paper thesis. Margin recommendations can be found in the Thesis and Dissertation Guide section on Margins.

To set margins in Word 2000:

    1. Select the FILE pull down menu.
    2. Select PAGE SETUP.
    3. Select the MARGINS tab.
    4. Set the appropriate top, bottom, right and left margins.
    5. Set the appropriate header and footer widths.
    6. Set APPLY TO to “Whole document”.

    Page Numbering

Lower-case Roman numerals are used for numbering the various preliminary pages of the document. Every page in the main body of the thesis or dissertation carries a page number in Arabic numerals. Page Numbering guidelines can be found in the Thesis and Dissertation Guide section on Page Numbering.

There are two different ways to set up page numbering in Word. You can write your entire thesis or dissertation in one Word document (called etd.doc) and use Section Breaks to separate the Roman Numerals from the Arabic Numerals. Section Breaks will not be discussed in this tutorial.

The second option is to write your preliminary pages in one Word document (lets call this prelim.doc) and the main body of your thesis/disseration in a separate Word document (we'll call this one etd.doc). Later, after these separate Word documents have been converted to PDF format, you can combine your multiple PDF files by inserting prelim.pdf before page 1 of etd.pdf.

To set up your page numbers in Word:

    1. Make sure you are on the first page you would like numbered.
    2. Select the INSERT pull down menu.
    3. Select PAGE NUMBERS.
    4. Select or deselect SHOW NUMBERS ON FIRST PAGE.
    5. Set POSITION to “Bottom of Page”.
    6. Set the ALIGNMENT.
    7. Select FORMAT.
    8. Under NUMBER FORMAT select small roman numerals (I, ii, iii…) or Arabic numerals (1,2,3…).

    9. Ensure that INCLUDE CHAPTER NUMBER is not marked.
    10. Select START AT and type in “iii”, "1" or the appropriate numeral. Hit OK.

    Line Spacing

Guidelines for line spacing can be found in the Thesis and Dissertaion Guide section on Line Spacing.

To set the line spacing in Word:

    1. Select the FORMAT pull down menu.
    2. Select PARAGRAPH.
    3. Under LINE SPACING select “single, 1.5 lines, or double”.

    Fonts

Font Guidelines can be found in the Thesis and Dissertaion Guide section on Font or Typeface.

    To set fonts in Word:

    1. Select the FORMAT pull down menu.
    2. Select FONTS.
    3. Under FONTS select your desired font.
    4. Under FONT SYLE select “Regular.”
    5. Under SIZE select your desired size.
    6. Select OK.
