    NC State is located in the center of Raleigh, NC, a city with a population of over 350,000. NC State is one of three research universities and nine colleges located in the Research Triangle area of North Carolina. The Research Triangle Park, the largest planned research and development park in the U.S. is also located in this area. Near the main campus, NC State has established a Centennial Campus which incorporates teaching and joint university/industry/government research in a beautiful, rapidly expanding campus area. The entire campus has 2,200 acres, 20 residence halls, and 613 apartments. The campus offers full student access to internet and e-mail from over 2800 computer stations. All residence halls and many off-campus housing units have internet access.

    1. Total Headcount Enrollment - Includes all students enrolled for one or more course in both on-campus regular fall term enrollment and distance education fall enrollment. Each person is counted only once. Excludes audit only.
    2. Undergraduate Enrollment - Includes bachelor's, associate, and lifelong undergraduate students.
    3. Graduate Enrollment -Includes masters, doctoral, professional, graduate in education and lifelong graduate students.

    8. New Freshman Average SAT Total Score - The mean Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) total score-the sum of SAT math and SAT critical reading scores. Beginning in 2006 a SAT writing section was added and the SAT verbal was changed to SAT critical reading. At the present time the SAT writing scores are not included in the total reported in item 8. The College Board changed the scale for SAT scores beginning with the spring of 1996. This change was designed to set the average score at 500 for both math and verbal (critical reading) Scholastic Aptitude Tests.
    9. Latest Six Year Cohort Graduation Rate - The six year graduation rate for the class that entered six years earlier. For example, the fall 2007 number represents the rate for the 2001 new freshman cohort.
    10. On-campus Total Headcount Enrollment - Includes all on-campus students enrolled for one or more course in regular fall term with each person counted only once. Excludes audit only and extension students.

    Items 13-16 - Represent the number of degrees conferred in the academic year that ends with May graduation. This is a count of degrees and one person may receive dual degrees.
    Degrees conferred by college represent the number of degrees conferred in the graduation year ending in May 2005. The colleges listed exclude the First Year College which does not grant degrees. Included in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences are degrees in agriculture, natural resources, biological sciences, and pre-medicine. Included in the College of Engineering are degrees in computer and information sciences. Included in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences are degrees in communications, social sciences, public affairs and services, social work, letters, criminal justice, and foreign languages. Included in the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences are atmospheric sciences and geology.

    18. Instructional Faculty (AAUP) - Includes full-time instructional faculty on 9 or 12 month contracts. Instructional faculty must have a primary responsibility of instruction and receive at least half of their funding from state appropriated instructional or research funds.
    19. Total Faculty with Tenure (AAUP) -Includes all full-time faculty who have tenure.(Subset of item 18)
    20. Percent of Full-time Instructional Faculty with Terminal Degree - The percent of full-time instructional faculty with doctorates or other terminal degrees. Information from Common Data Set-item I-1f.
    21. Total Full-Time Staff - Includes full-time SPA and EPA personnel who do not meet the IPEDS/AAUP definition of faculty. .
