Summary 7-Year Table of Employees at NC State University

In the fall 2011 personnel census, the county-based Cooperative Extension Service employees were brought into the population reported to UNC-GA and to IPEDS. These employees include the Field Faculty and many other support staff.

A change in color indicates that the year cannot be meaningfully compared to the prior year due to definition changes.

Definition Notes:

• These data present the number of filled (paid) positions and are based on the Personnel Data File presented to UNC-General Administration, reflecting an annual census date of September 30. These are headcounts of all full- and part-time employees and exclude vacant positions and individuals on unpaid leave.
• Also excluded from this population are contractors, people working on campus who are not paid by NC State, temporary employees paid by the hour, work-study students, and graduate assistants.
• Changes in personnel policies and data definitions, and a conversion to a new taxonomy in 2009 (JCAT), have contributed to changes in individuals’ classifications, disrupting trend lines. Of particular note is the extraction of post docs and CVM house staff from the “staff professional” category to their own unique category.

Observations on 2011

• As noted above, an increase of nearly 10% in total employees resulted from including the population of county-based Cooperative Extension Service employees. This change was requested by UNC-GA. These employees were part of NC State University in the past, but were excluding from the counting rules at the beginning of data collection about 3 decades ago. In 2010 a request was made to bring them in on the 2011 personnel census.

Observations on Changes Between 2008 and 2009

• The total number of employees dropped from 8,262 to 7,982, consistent with significant budget cuts. The total number of faculty decreased from 2,132 to 2,078 (2.5%), while the number of non-faculty (executives, staff, post docs and house staff) decreased from 6,130 to 5,904 (3.7%).
• The net number of tenured faculty increased from 1,026 to 1,047, signaling the University’s commitment to protecting tenured faculty and to ensure a critical mass of tenured faculty to support increasing enrollment.
• The number of tenure-track faculty decreased from 347 to 322, indicating both the achievement of tenure by some and departmental caution in filling vacant tenure-track positions during a year of budget reductions.
• Non-tenure track faculty numbers decreased from 759 to 709. This is primarily attributable to individuals whose contracts expired -- and who were not issued subsequent contracts or replaced -- most likely due to budget constraints.
• The number of people reported as executives, administrators, or managers dropped from 426 to 245, largely reflecting the reassignment of EPA and SPA staff from the administrator category to the professional category. About half were EPA staff in Admissions, Financial Aid, and Advancement whom UNC-GA identifies as SAAO-II but whose responsibilities are defined as professional.
• Staff numbers dropped from 5,417 to 5,390, despite reassignments from the administrator category to the professional category. Changes resulting from the JCAT classification taxonomy caused shifts among other staff categories as well.
