American
Educational Research Association
The American Educational Research Association (AERA), founded
in 1916, is concerned with improving the educational process by
encouraging scholarly inquiry related to education and by promoting
the dissemination and practical application of research results.

ERIC
Clearinghouse on Assessment, Evaluation, Research Information
The U.S. Department of Education closed all ERIC Clearinghouses
as of December 19, 2003. A summary
of resources lost and those still available can be accessed
on-line.
National
Center for Education Statistics
The National Center for Education Statistics, Office of Educational
Research & Improvement, U.S. Dept. of Education, provides
a number of publications relevant to online education. Among these
are the annual Projections
of Education Statistics and the Condition
of Education (an annual compendium report to Congress that
describes the current status and recent progress of education
in the U.S. It includes some information on online
learning.) Of special interest to those studying online education
is the report "Distance
Education Instruction by Postsecondary Faculty and Staff: Fall
1998" which focuses on whether instructional faculty
and staff indicated teaching at least one distance class. This
report uses data from the 1999 National Study of Postsecondary
Faculty to study the question.
Center
for Applied research in Educational Technology (CARET)
CARET is a project of the International Society for Technology
in Education in partnership with Educational Support Systems.
CARET was founded in 2000 with a grant from the Bill & Melinda
Gates Foundation. CARET bridges education technology research
to practice by offering research-based answers to critical questions
surrounding K-12 education.
State Educational Technology Director's Association
Resources are availalbe in support of the U.S. Department of
Education's Evaluating
State Educational Technology Programs (ESETP) grants. These
programs in Arkansas, Iowa, Maine, North Carolina, Pennsylvania,
Tennessee, Texas, West Virginia, and Wisconsin are conducting
large-scale studies of the role technology plays in student achievement. Current
