Assessing the Impact of Technology-Rich Spaces on Student Learning

Resources

Web Resources

This page provides links to various web resources related to assessing the impact of technology on student learning.  This includes web logs (blogs) and general assessment and evaluation web sites for both higher education and K-12.  Most of the annotated descriptions associated with these links have been taken from the individual web sites and should not be seen as UPA promoting one resource over another.

Web logs
Ray Schroeder, Office of Communication, Director of the Office of Technology-Enhanced Learning at the University of Illinois at Springfield, and Faculty Associate at the University of Illinois Online has created three web logs (blogs) devoted to on-line learning:
Assessment and evaluation web sites (higher education)

American Educational Research Association
The American Educational Research Association (AERA), founded in 1916, is concerned with improving the educational process by encouraging scholarly inquiry related to education and by promoting the dissemination and practical application of research results. This links to AERA's reports, journal abstracts, and the online version of Educational Researcher.

ERIC Clearinghouse on Assessment, Evaluation, Research Information
The U.S. Department of Education closed all ERIC Clearinghouses as of December 19, 2003. A summary of resources lost and those still available can be accessed on-line.

National Center for Education Statistics
The National Center for Education Statistics, Office of Educational Research & Improvement, U.S. Dept. of Education, provides a number of publications relevant to online education. Among these are the annual Projections of Education Statistics and the Condition of Education (an annual compendium report to Congress that describes the current status and recent progress of education in the U.S. It includes some information on online learning.) Of special interest to those studying online education is the report "Distance Education Instruction by Postsecondary Faculty and Staff: Fall 1998" which focuses on whether instructional faculty and staff indicated teaching at least one distance class. This report uses data from the 1999 National Study of Postsecondary Faculty to study the question.

Assessment and evaluation web sites (K-12):

Center for Applied research in Educational Technology (CARET)
CARET is a project of the International Society for Technology in Education in partnership with Educational Support Systems. CARET was founded in 2000 with a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. CARET bridges education technology research to practice by offering research-based answers to critical questions surrounding K-12 education.

State Educational Technology Director's Association
Resources are availalbe in support of the U.S. Department of Education's Evaluating State Educational Technology Programs (ESETP) grants. These programs in Arkansas, Iowa, Maine, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, West Virginia, and Wisconsin are conducting large-scale studies of the role technology plays in student achievement. Current Reports and Research are of interest.
