Learning in a Technology-Rich Environment

Goals

  • Accelerate our movement to a learning-oriented culture, using technology to enable and facilitate students' success:
    • as they navigate through our complex institution
    • in their academic programs, improving their learning across the curriculum and technology fluency
    • as graduates, finding success in their professions
    • as alumni prepared to be lifelong learners, responding to and embracing change in a global society
  • Develop technology-fluent faculty and students who understand and critically use technology effectively to improve teaching and learning
  • Expand high quality distance education and diffuse innovations into on-campus learning
  • Integrate academic and student support services into a seamless, technology-rich learning environment
  • Define the kind of technology-rich learning environment we want to provide, including infrastructure, tools, facilities, and content
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive, university-wide technology plan to leverage resources and address gaps in service and support

Possible Strategies in the QEP

  • Adjust educational programs - general education, courses and curricula at both undergraduate and graduate levels - to fit a learning-centered model in a technology-rich environment
  • Use technology to develop more student-centered, active learning experiences, such as inquiry-guided learning and service learning
  • Ensure that student/teacher and student/student interactions are key components in learning by fostering best practices in the application of technology
  • Provide faculty development opportunities and rewards for facilitating learning in a technology-rich environment
  • Promote on-line services to students (e.g., plans of work, virtual advising) and to faculty
  • Facilitate student and faculty understanding of issues associated with communicating scholarly information
  • Expand available learning and teaching tools, such as enriched content, multi-media, and electronic performance monitoring systems
  • Take full advantage of new construction and renovations to develop technology-rich teaching facilities
  • Monitor and fine-tune these strategies through regular assessment

Value to Students and the University

  • Attract the best students and faculty to NC State
  • Improve students' educational experience and employability
  • Increase the number of students who can be educated in off-campus locations
  • Distinguish NC State as a leader among institutions using technology to facilitate a learning-oriented culture
